Yet another great breakfast put on by Slow Food Noosa at Blue Ginger. I often wish I had more time to attend more of these, and made the extra effort this time because I really wanted to meet their guest speakers Wil and Megan Seiler from Bottle Tree Hill Organics from Murgon.

I have been a long time fan of Wil and Megan’s efforts; such dedications to fresh organically grown produce and one of the few farmers of free range, pasture fed pigs in Queensland, all of which is produced on their 540 acre farm. We got to find out a little more about farming pigs and their seasonal activities around the farm all while we enjoyed a breakfast of bacon wrapped pork sausages from the farm, poached eggs, fried tomato and grilled ciabatta, pretty delish, with the bonus of a clear conscience knowing that we had eaten ethically produced pork.

I am visiting Wil and Megan’s farm in a few weeks time, so I will tell you all about it then, but it was great to get an overview and I am pretty excited about visiting.

The breakfast was a lead up to a number of Slow Food ‘Slow Pig’ events. The first is the ‘Nose to Tail’ workshop on Saturday 16th July. Held at the Freestyle Escape outdoor kitchen at Dulong, Peter Wolfe of Cedar Creek Farm will be showing how to butcher a locally raised pig (see story below). Assisted by Katrina Ryan from Spirit House Cooking School, it will be a full day event of making trotter sausages, brawn, curing and roasting a joint in the woodfired oven. This will be a rare opportunity to get an insight into the whole beast concept of eating, so this one is one not to be missed.

The second event is ‘Paddock to Plate’ to be held at Peregian Community Hall. The harvest style event with BBQ’s, sausages from the ‘Nose to Tail’ event and Bottle Tree Hill Organics, buffalo mozzarella, redclaw marrons, pickles, chutneys, breads, Eumundi Smokehouse goods and many others, showcasing produce from Peregian Community Gardens, it should be quite the fun day.

So look out for those. Numbers are limited for the ‘Nose to Tail’ event, so make sure you do not leave it too long and book.
